The Queen Anne Movie Guild begins its sixth season with a presentation of “Plunder: The Crime of Our Time”, a hard-hitting investigative film by Danny Schechter. The "News Dissector" explores how the financial crisis, itself a pyramid scheme, was built on a foundation of criminal activity that led to massive foreclosures affecting 10 million homeowners, rising unemployment, economic collapse and increasing hardships worldwide. It connects the dots identifying who the victims and beneficiaries are in what one former investment banker says "may well turn out to be the greatest nonviolent crime against humanity in history."

Salmon SEEson
From mid October to December the Salmon SEEson program brings volunteer naturalists to great spots to see salmon. Come visit one of the viewing spots, talk with and learn from naturalists, and cheer the salmon along this annual journey back to spawn in their birthplace. Many of the sites, including the Ballard Locks, Piper's Creek, and Issaquah Creek, are within a half hour drive.

Free Emergency Preparedness Training Warren G Magnuson Park, 7400 Sand Point Way NE (Building 406, the Brig)
Seattle Office of Emergency Management is offering classes to enhance your ability to personally respond during disasters. The classes are excellent training for organized community groups—neighbors, friends, co-workers, where they can learn essential life-saving skills.
Classes include: Saturday, October 16th or December 11th, 8:30 AM—5:00 PM Disaster First Aid Dual course teaches basic first aid and CPR as well as caring for multiple injuries after a major disaster when 9-1-1 is overwhelmed or unavailable.
Saturday, November 20th, 9:00 AM—11:00 AM or 12:00 PM—2:00 PM Fire Extinguisher & Utility Control Learn dangers of fire and how to use small, portable fire extinguishers.

Lane Closures on Broad St. and Boren Ave. N
The eastbound right-hand lane of Broad St. between Dexter Ave. N and 9th Ave. N will be closed, including the off-ramp access to the single westbound lane on Mercer St. Additionally, Boren Ave. N between Valley St. and Mercer St. will be closed in preparation for the construction of utility and other work located to the north of existing Mercer St. within the future westbound lanes. Traffic detours, sidewalk closures, pedestrian detours, noise, dust, vibration, increased truck traffic, and parking restrictions can be expected.

Countywide Community Forums Launched
King County's nationally recognized Countywide Community Forums (CCF) launched a new website and engagement program designed to enhance citizen education and input into difficult policy issues faced by the county. The month-long effort will focus on King County's budget and provide an easy way for people to learn about the topic, share their ideas with other people, and submit a survey to the King County Council, both online and offline.
During the effort, CCF citizen councilors will be asked to share their views on the current topic titled: "Citizen Priorities for Government in Challenging Economic Times." Through the new website, participants will be able to engage online and provide input to the county in the form of an Opinionnaire® survey. The survey focuses on identifying the county's highest priorities for spending, collecting revenue, and achieving efficiencies.

Arson Alert System
The Seattle Fire Department Fire Prevention Division has an Arson Alarm Hotline to report any information related to arsons around your neighborhood or business. The Seattle Fire Department and Seattle Police Department actively investigate the crime. Please report any information you believe may be related to arson on the ARSON ALARM HOTLINE at 1-800-55-ARSON. A reward may be provided for information resulting in an arson conviction. Persons providing information may remain anonymous. If you see any suspicious activity taking place, please call 911.

Suggest a New P-Patch Community Garden Site
P-Patch Community Gardening received extra finances with the Parks and Green Spaces Levy. Voters passed the levy that includes $2 million for new P-Patches and other community garden developments. Now P-Patch community gardening continues to grow in Seattle.
The P-Patch Program’s primary goal with new garden development is to increase community gardening opportunities in Seattle, especially for underserved communities. A first round of projects was identified in the spring of 2009 and work on those projects is moving forward.
The second round of projects will be identified in the fall of 2010. From now until then, the community Is welcome to suggest new potential garden spots.
Levy-funded projects will focus on publicly-owned land in the priority areas like Queen Anne, NW West Seattle, N. Delridge, Rainier Beach, N. Beacon Hill, and Ravenna Bryant. These areas are underserved by the P-Patch Community Gardening Program, getting denser, and have relatively high percentages of under-represented populations, or are called out in the Parks and Green Spaces Levy.
If you know of a potential site that might be a good fit, please let us know. You can submit your ideas at http://www.seattle.gov/neighborhoods/ppatch/levyComment.htm.
During the fall, all the suggestions will be considered by a committee on the basis of strategic criteria and a racial equity approach to identify a final list. Like all P-Patch community gardens, these projects will be public resources that build and sustain community as they are imagined, built, and cared for into the future. Your good suggestions are a key first step. |

City Data Open to the Public
Sixty city of Seattle datasets are now accessible online at http://data.seattle.gov, which is part of Seattle’s municipal web site. The new site holds significant amounts of information about operations and infrastructure, such as locations of city facilities, schools, and food banks.
Data.seattle.gov is a first step in making data publicly available to meet the city of Seattle’s goals for an open, transparent and accountable government. The site initially posts datasets from My Neighborhood Map, which is a feature on the city’s website, www.seattle.gov. It will add data managed by city departments, beginning with data which is commonly requested through the public disclosure process. Some of this data is already available on department websites, but data.seattle.gov will centralize the information on a single site. |

Seattle Offers Compost Bins at Huge Discounts
The City of Seattle is making it easier for Seattleites to garden the natural way by offering huge discounts on compost bins. Seattle residents will save over $100 on high-quality compost bins while building healthy soils, and helping their plants to thrive.
Local gardeners can take advantage of three great offers: · Green Cone Food Composting Bins for food scraps: 2 cones for $40, or 1 cone for $25. Limit two per household. · Yard Waste Compost Bins for yard scraps: $25 each. Limit one per household. · Rain barrels to collect Seattle’s famed rain for yard use: $65 plus tax.

Home delivery or picked up is available at the Seattle Conservation Corps office at Sand Point/Magnuson Park, Monday - Friday from 8:30AM to 3:30PM. Sale of bins are restricted to City of Seattle residents.

Seattle City Light Customers Can Recycle CFL’s at 2 Locations
Seattle City Light encourages it’s customers to use energy efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs and to recycle them when it’s time to dispose of them. City light has provided two recycling locations: · City Light’s South Service Center, 3613 4thAve. S. (4th& Spokane) · North Service Center, 1300 N. 97th St. (97th & Stone Way) Open from 8:00AM—5:00PM, Monday- Friday. The collection locations only accept compact fluorescent bulbs, not fluorescent tube lights.

Department of Neighborhoods Closures in 2010

Department of Neighborhoods Events Calendar
Now you can post your events and activities to the Department of Neighborhoods (DON) new events calendar on our website. Just visit our events page at www.seattle.gov/neighborhoods/calendar, hit the link for "Submit an Event" on the upper left-hand column, read the "How to Submit..." and policy guidelines, and complete the form.* Once your event is submitted, it takes two-four days to have the submission approved and then it is posted to the DON website. Not only will it appear on our calendar, but will automatically appear on the citywide calendar which gets thousands of hits a week.
*hint - when filling out the form, you can select more than one neighborhood and event type. |

Woodland Park Zoo and Seattle Aquarium Passes
Passes for the Woodland Park Zoo and Seattle Aquarium are available at the NSC. These are available for low-income families with a limit of 4 per household. |
Senior Discount Card Available
A discount card provided by the Seattle Mayor's Office for Senior Citizens (aged 60 or older) of businesses and organizations that give discounts and special offers to seniors. |
Small Sparks Community Development Grant is Waiting!
Do you have ideas for building community that could use up to $1000 from the City's Small Sparks program? Small Sparks seeks to bring together new people. The goal is to get new people (e.g., recent immigrants, youth, seniors, and people with disabilities) involved in creative small-scale community building initiatives. For example, a Small Sparks project in the Beacon Hill neighborhood was done where people organized a paper airplane toss from a tower. Mayor McGinn’s Proposed 2011-2012 City Budget as it relates to Seattle of Neighborhoods (DON):
· Closing 7 Neighborhood Service Centers (Queen Anne/Magnolia, Downtown, Capitol Hill, Greenwood, Fremont, Beacon Hill, and West Seattle)
· Eliminating 6 Neighborhood District Coordinators (Queen Anne/Magnolia, Downtown, Capitol Hill, Greenwood, Central, and West Seattle)
· Reducing Neighborhood Matching Fund budget by $700,000
· Reducing Historic Preservation budget by $300,000 which includes eliminating one time funding of $127,000 for survey and inventory work in Southeast Seattle
